So that kind of prepared her (for the competition)."įor Liberty, whose favorite subjects are history and geography, the memorization competition provides an opportunity to put what she has learned to the test. "We have three cycles of material we work through and then revisit when they’re older, every three years," Gideon said. "This year, she set out to memorize and recite all three cycles of content in one sitting, which we called a triple crown. Through the Classical Conversations program, students learn the basic content of a wide variety of subjects from the time they are preschool-age and gain a deeper understanding of those subjects over time. "Starting at age 4, they start doing an oral presentation for their class every week for 24 weeks," Gideon said. "She’s been doing this since she’s 4, so she never learned to be afraid of public speaking. This is Liberty's seventh year in the Classical Conversations program, which fosters public speaking skills at a young age. "I am proud, but at the same time I’m also a spectator of this whole experience and I’m amazed at what's happening," said Liberty's mother, Lauren Gideon. "It’s not because we’re the perfect family with the perfect plan for education, we just work with what we’ve got." The competition is held by Classical Conversations, a "leading classical, Christian curriculum tailored to homeschool education," according to a news release. Classical Conversations students aged 11-12 who have earned the Memory Master title at least twice can qualify for the national competition, which is scheduled for April 28. Liberty is one of 16 finalists who will compete in the National Memory Master Competition for a chance at the national title and a $10,000 reward. Now, she hopes to add a new title to her growing list of accomplishments: National Memory Master Champion. At just 11 years old, Liberty Gideon of Ankeny has achieved the title of Memory Master through the Classical Conversations program five times.
